Challenge Overview: The existing finishes and materials created a dark, heavy feeling aesthetic that no longer appealed to them. The room also had a severe lack of functional storage, and a lot of wasted space within the room. The clients were also interested in being forward thinking, and creating a more ADA compliant space for the future as they age in place within the home.
Process Overview: This couple was fun and great to work with, and came into the design process with their list of ideas and challenges within the existing space. This allowed me the opportunity, from the very beginning, to know how best to address these issues and make suggestions that would best suit their needs and wants.
Customized Solution: To alleviate the dark, heaviness of the room, I removed the bulky tiled “windows” into the shower and replaced them with standard half walls and stationary panes of glass, providing more light to the shower and openness to the room itself. I specified a large format to provide a bit more reflective surface through the glass. We also created a custom cantilevered shower bench. We removed the built-in linen closet behind the door, which was being under-utilized; and replaced it with a functional furniture piece the client found and could better utilize within the space. For the new sink vanity space, I provided a design with as many drawers as I could possibly get, including reversing the sink base to provide a useable drawer underneath the vanity. In addition, a tall linen tower with shelves for towels above, and a flip up door below was provided, to give a useable space where the client could leave things plugged in on the counter (i.e. hair dryer, electric toothbrush, etc.) but conceal them when not in use.
Thoughts from the Client: Devon was certainly professional and knowledgeable during our first meeting. She listened to all ideas and included some of her own. Her presentation was easy to follow and included pictures and diagrams for easy reference and understanding. She answered our questions and helped with our concerns.
We love our new bathroom! It fixed the problem areas we had before such as brightness, wasted space and vanity storage. The process was easy and it was a job well done. We did run into a few snags regarding supply issues, but Cabinetry by Better Bilt handled each one quickly and efficiently. Our bathroom was a place we used for necessity, now it’s a place that’s calm and soothing. This is our second time using CBBB for a remodel and design need and will definitely be using them again!
